Privacy Policy

1. Who we are
Breakstep (“Breakstep”, “we”, “us”, “our”) is a mobile game published by devbynight. This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you use the Breakstep app and this website (together, the “Service”). For anything in this policy you can reach us at devbynight1@gmail.com.
For the purposes of the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation, devbynight is the controller of the limited personal data described below.
2. What the game collects
Breakstep does not ask you to create an account, sign in, or give us your name, email address or phone number. There is no chat, no profile and no social feature. We do not operate any server that stores your game data.
The app does not request or access your camera, microphone, contacts, photos, files, call logs, SMS, or precise (GPS) location.
What is collected comes from two Google services embedded in the app — Google AdMob for advertising and Google Analytics for Firebase for usage measurement:
| Data | Collected by | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising ID (Android Advertising ID / Apple IDFA) | Google AdMob | To select and measure ads, and to limit how often the same ad is shown |
| Device & app information — model, operating system version, language, country, app version | AdMob, Firebase Analytics | To serve compatible ads and to understand which devices the game runs badly on |
| IP address, and an approximate location (typically city or region) derived from it | AdMob, Firebase Analytics | To meet regional legal requirements and serve regionally appropriate ads |
| Ad interaction — ads shown, ads completed, rewards earned | AdMob, Firebase Analytics | To pay for the game's development and to detect invalid traffic |
| Diagnostics — app launch time, responsiveness, energy use and similar performance signals | AdMob, Firebase Analytics | To find and fix performance problems on particular devices |
| Gameplay events — level started, level completed, level failed, distance reached, options used | Firebase Analytics | To find levels that are unfairly hard or broken, and to improve the game |
| App instance ID — a random identifier for one installation | Firebase Analytics | To count players rather than sessions. It is reset if you uninstall the app |
Gameplay events describe what happened in the game — for example that level 7 was failed after 340 metres. They do not contain your name, your contacts, or anything you have typed.
3. Data stored on your device
Your progress is written to your device's own private app storage and stays there. It is not uploaded to us and we cannot read it. This includes:
- Best score and best distance
- Which levels you have completed and the stars earned
- Recovered spools and which moves you have unlocked
- Whether you have seen the intro and the warm-up
- Counters used to limit how often ads are shown
There is no cloud save and no way to transfer progress between devices. Uninstalling the app deletes all of it permanently, and neither you nor we can recover it afterwards.
4. Advertising
Breakstep is free and is paid for by advertising, supplied by Google AdMob. The game shows:
- Banner ads on the title and level-select screens only — never during play;
- Interstitial ads at a small number of natural breaks, such as after completing a level;
- Rewarded video ads, which are always optional. These only ever play when you choose to tap an offer, and you receive the reward only if you watch to the end.
We limit ads to content rated suitable for a general audience. Google, and the advertising partners it works with, may use the advertising ID and the other data above to select ads and measure their performance. You can read how Google uses data from apps that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
5. Analytics
We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand how the game is played in aggregate: how far players get, which levels defeat them, and whether the game crashes on particular devices. This is how a game made by a very small team gets fixed and balanced. Google's privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.
6. Consent (EEA, UK & Switzerland)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the app shows a consent message the first time you play, provided through Google's User Messaging Platform, before personalised ads are requested.
You may accept or refuse personalised advertising. Refusing does not restrict the game in any way — every level and every feature remains available; you will simply see non-personalised ads. Where the consent message is required, you can reopen it at any time from the in-game privacy option to change your answer.
7. Legal bases
Where the UK/EU GDPR applies, we rely on:
- Consent — for personalised advertising and, where required, analytics. You may withdraw it at any time as described above.
- Legitimate interests — for basic, non-personalised advertising, for measuring and improving the game, and for detecting fraud and invalid ad traffic. Our interest is in keeping a free game funded and working; we consider this balanced against the very limited data involved.
8. How information is shared
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with anyone for their own independent marketing.
Data is processed by the service providers named above — Google AdMob and Google Analytics for Firebase — and, in the case of advertising, by the advertising partners Google works with in order to serve and measure ads. We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.
Under certain US state privacy laws, sharing data with advertising partners for targeted advertising can be classified as “sharing” or a “sale”. If you are in such a state you may opt out by disabling personalised advertising in your device settings, as described below.
9. Retention
We do not hold a copy of your data ourselves. Google retains advertising and analytics data according to its own policies; Firebase Analytics data is retained for a limited period configured in our Firebase project and is then deleted or aggregated. Data saved on your device is kept until you uninstall the app or clear its data.
10. Your choices & rights
Controls available to everyone
- Reset or delete your advertising ID. Android: Settings → Privacy → Ads. iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. Deleting it stops personalised advertising on the device for every app.
- Withdraw consent where a consent message was shown, using the in-game privacy option.
- Delete everything by uninstalling the app. There is no server-side account to delete, because one was never created.
Rights under GDPR, UK GDPR and similar laws
Subject to local law you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing of your personal data, to data portability, and to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. Write to devbynight1@gmail.com and we will respond within the time your law requires.
Please note we identify data only by advertising identifier. To act on a request about advertising data we may need you to supply that identifier, because we hold nothing else that could link the data to you. We will not ask you for extra personal information in order to identify you.
11. Children
Breakstep is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided personal data to us, contact devbynight1@gmail.com and we will delete what we can and request its deletion by our providers.
12. Security
Data sent by the app to Google's advertising and analytics services is encrypted in transit. Progress saved on your device is protected by your operating system's own app sandbox. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
13. International transfers
Our providers are global and may process data in countries outside your own, including the United States. Where data is transferred out of the EEA or the UK, those providers rely on safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and, where applicable, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
14. Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes affecting how your data is used will be announced in the app or on this page before taking effect.
